The Institute of Biomaterials at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg started teaching and research activities on 1st October 2009 with the appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dr. h.c. Aldo R. Boccaccini (formerly at Imperial College London, UK), as Professor and Head of the Institute of Biomaterials.
