Novel hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium alloy substrates using electrophoretic deposition

The treatment of bone fractures is done either through surgery or fixation using biomaterials. Metal-based biomaterials, such as titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V exhibiting good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, potentially show limited osseointegration. Therefore, surface modification of metallic alloys with hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] aims to improve bioactivity and to achieve rapid osseointegration. Hydroxyapatite coatings of tailored microstructure can be deposited on metallic substrates of different shapes, e.g. screws, by Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) [1]. In this project, the coating characteristics will be determined in terms of adhesion to the substrate, thickness and homogeneity, microstructure, in vitro bioactivity and cell biocompatibility.
