Antibacterial and bioactive coatings on metallic substrates by electrophoretic deposition

Betreuer: Laura Ramos, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Bacterial infections play a very important role in the failure of dental and orthopedic implants. This project focuses on electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [1] to develop coatings with bioactive and antibacterial character on metallic biomaterials to be used in medical implants. The coatings will consist of a protein component and Copper doped bioactive glass. Zein is the major storage protein of corn, its biodegradability; biocompatibility and film-forming property are key parameters for its uses in the biomedical field [2]. In addition, both silicate-based bioactive glasses and copper ions have demonstrated angiogenic activity [3]. The study will expand from previous studies at the Institute of Biomaterials in Erlangen on the EPD of zein-based coatings [4, 5]. The novel coatings will be analyzed and studied through SEM, FTIR, contact angle measurements and SBF immersion tests to evaluate and optimize the processing parameters. This project is carried out in the framework of the I.DEAR students exchange program between National University of Mar del Plata (UMDP), Argentina, and our Institute, funded by the Argentine-German University Centre (CUAA-DAHZ). Supervisor of the project in Argentina is Dr. Josefina Ballarre (INTEMA), UMDP.
