Electrophoretic deposition of bioactive inorganic particles containing polymer coatings for biomedical applications
Supervisors: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Dr. Fatih Erdem Baştan
Recently, polymer composite coatings, including biopolymers and inorganic ceramic particles, have been proposed to be applied on implants to achieve improved properties compatible with bone tissue, including bioactivity and biocompatibility, in order to cope with metals low integration capability and corrosion risk. This project, therefore, focuses on the production and characterization of alginate/hydroxyapatite composite coatings by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) following the EPD technology available at the FAU Institute of Biomaterials [1]. The effect of EPD parameters on the layers will be evaluated in terms of morphology, chemical composition, and acellular bioactivity in simulated body fluid.
