Combination of Magnetic Drug Targeting with radiation therapy for bi-selective drug delivery
Betreuer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Prof. Dr. med Christoph Alexiou (HNO-Klinik Erlangen, SEON)
This research project involves the development, design and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles, which combine the concepts of Magnetic Drug Targeting (MDT) and Radiation Therapy for bi-selective drug delivery in cancer treatment.
One Part of this project focuses on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), which is used for the treatment of glioma. Boron can be activated by neutrons (from the neutron source FRM II in Garching) upon which it decays to alpha and lithium particles as well as gamma radiation.
The second part of this project focuses on Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). For this a photoactive substances, so called photosensitizer, is required. Those photosensitizers can be activated by light in the visible region, in order to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS).
