Development of antibacterial double-layered composite coatings containing bioactive glass (BG) for metallic (Ti) implants by electrophoretic deposition (EPD)
Supervisors: Zoya Hadzhieva, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini
Failure of metallic implants such as bone replacement devices is a growing cause for concern worldwide. To enhance their osteoinductive and osteintegrative properties, metallic surfaces can be coated with composite layers made of an inorganic phase embedded in a natural polymer by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [1,2], a colloidal process enabling a uniform deposition of particles on complex-shaped substrates with cost-effectiveness [3]. The present work aims to develop double-layered composite coatings on Ti substrates by EPD. The coatings should be made of a drug-loaded protein-based layer and a second layer incorporating bioactive glass particles (BG), to improve the antibacterial effect and bioactivity of the coating, respectively. This new coating system will be fully characterized and should also address the control of biodegradability for longer periods of time [4], paving the way to a new generation of suitable orthopedic implants.
