45S5 bioactive glass scaffolds coated with metallic ion-doped mesoporous bioactive glass particles for bone tissue engineering

The aim of this Master thesis project is to improve the mechanical properties and bioactive behavior of the 45S5 bioactive glass scaffolds fabricated by the foam replica method [1]. The approach involves coating the scaffolds with metallic ion-doped mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) particles. Firstly, MBG particles are synthesized by a modified Stöber sol-gel method [2]. These MBG are deposited on the scaffolds using a dipping technique. The pore microstructure of the scaffolds and the morphology of the coatings are investigated by SEM. The mechanical properties of BG-scaffolds, both coated and uncoated scaffolds are measured in terms of compressive strength. The bioactivity of these two scaffold groups is assessed by immersion in simulated body fluid for 3, 7, 14, 21 days. The effect of MBG coating on scaffold porosity, mechanical properties and bioactivity are discussed.
