Development of a new family of gelatin coated bioactive glass-based scaffolds

Bioactive glasses are outstanding biomaterials for bone tissue engineering due to their excellent bioactivity, osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity properties [1]. Moreover, different polymer coatings are being investigated to improve the compressive strength of bioactive glass scaffolds [2]. The aim of this project is to fabricate bioactive glass (BG)-based scaffolds by the standard foam replica method introduced in 2006 [1] and to develop biocompatible coatings by using natural biodegradable polymers to enhance the mechanical properties of the scaffolds [3]. Both coated and uncoated scaffolds are assessed in terms of bioactivity by immersion in simulated body fluid. Final characterization of the samples by means of SEM, FTIR analysis and compressive strength tests will be conducted. The scaffolds’ properties will be compared with those of similar scaffolds developed previously at the FAU Institute of Biomaterials [3].
