Interfacial interactions in calcium carbonate materials in the context of biomedical applications

The PhD project is studying a range of interfacial interactions in calcium carbonate materials of different crystallinities following biomimetic mineralization approaches. The characterisation of interfacial effects and general healing processes is carried out by assessing the nanostructure of the materials using a range of analytical methods, e.g. high resolution SEM, XRD, FTIR and TEM. It is expected that information generated from these experiments will be useful for designing novel inorganic bone substituting materials. This research project is being carried out in the framework of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network (ETN) Horizon 2020 project: “Nano-tailoring organo-mineral materials – Controlling strength and healing with organic molecules in mineral interfaces (NanoHeal)” and in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners in the ETN, including links with the top computational groups taking part in the consortium (e.g. Computational Chemical Physics group at Imperial College London, Prof. F. Bresme).
